How to make a before and after photo for your business

Combine two real project photos in Canva Free, add clear labels and export a before-and-after image for your business website or social posts.

A before-and-after image helps customers understand work that a finished photo alone might not explain. It can show a cleaned surface, a repaired fence or a renovated room in one view.

In this tutorial, you will combine two real photos using Canva Free, label them and download an image for your website or social account. You do not need a paid design plan.

Before you begin

Choose a before photo and an after photo from the same job, taken from a similar angle. Get permission to use the images and remove visible personal details such as house numbers or vehicle plates where appropriate.

Use your actual work. Stock photos and AI-generated improvements cannot demonstrate a job your business completed.

Step 1 Choose a format

Open Canva and start a square social post or another format suited to your destination. A square canvas gives you a straightforward starting point for a side-by-side comparison.

If you also need a wide website image, create a separate blank design in the correct proportions. You can repeat the layout without using a paid automatic-resize feature.

Step 2 Add a two-photo layout

Open Elements and look for Grids. Choose a free layout with two equal frames beside each other. If your two photos work better above and below, choose a stacked layout.

Canva's image combining guide explains the grid workflow. Keep the layout simple so the photos remain the focus.

Step 3 Upload and place the photos

Choose Uploads and add both images. Drag the before photo into the first frame and the after photo into the second.

Open each photo's cropping controls and reposition it inside its frame. Match recognizable features across the pair, such as a doorway, garden edge or section of fence. Aim to show roughly the same area at a comparable scale.

Keep important work away from the outer edges, where platform previews might crop it.

Step 4 Keep the comparison honest

Avoid filters that make the before photo look worse or the after photo look artificially better. If lighting, weather or camera position changed significantly, explain that context in the caption.

Do not use retouching to remove unfinished work, defects or objects that change the apparent result. Crop to make the work understandable, while preserving the relevant context.

For example, showing only a clean section of a driveway beside a much wider dirty section makes the comparison harder to evaluate. Use a matching view of the same surface.

Step 5 Add readable labels

Use the Text tool to add Before and After above or below the appropriate photo. Choose dark text on a light background or white text on a dark strip, keeping it away from the work itself.

Add a small business name if useful. Keep logos and promotional text modest: someone should be able to understand the result before reading your branding.

Step 6 Download the image

Select Share, then Download, and choose PNG or JPG. Check for paid elements if Canva requests payment; replace them with free alternatives.

Open the downloaded image on your phone. Check that the comparison, labels and important details are visible without zooming. Rename the file descriptively, such as fence-repair-before-after-strathmore.jpg, where those details are accurate.

Step 7 Add an explanatory caption

Write one or two sentences explaining the actual work. For example: “Before and after replacing damaged fence boards and rebuilding the gate. Completed for a residential property in Strathmore.” Use only details that apply to the job.

Add one clear next step if the image is promotional. On your website, include descriptive alternative text, such as “Before and after repair of damaged fence boards and gate.”

Completion checklist

Tick each item as you complete it. Your checks stay on this page until you leave or reload.
