A useful flyer tells someone what you offer, whether it is relevant to them and how to respond. You can create the design in Canva Free using free elements and your own photos.

This tutorial takes you from a blank page to a downloadable flyer. Designing and downloading can be free; printing and delivery are separate costs.

Before you begin

Prepare one offer or service, your business name, a real photo or logo, service area, contact details and any terms that affect the offer. Use a Canva Free account and a computer for this walkthrough.

Write the content before choosing colours. For a fictional local cleaning business, the outline might be:

  • Headline: One-time home cleaning in Strathmore.
  • Detail: Tell us your home size and preferred date for a quote.
  • Evidence: A genuine photo of the team or its work.
  • Action: Call the business number or visit the quote page.

Replace this outline with accurate information about your business.

Step 1 Choose the size before designing

Open Canva's flyer maker and start a flyer design. For ordinary Canadian office printing, US Letter is 8.5 by 11 inches. Choose the size your printer or distribution method needs.

If you only need a social post, consider starting in that format instead. A printed flyer shrunk into a social image can make the text difficult to read.

Step 2 Pick a free layout or start blank

Search templates for a simple business flyer. Check that the chosen template and its individual photos, graphics and fonts are available on the Free plan.

Alternatively, start with a blank page, one headline, one photo and a short contact section. You do not need premium stock images or automatic resizing for this task.

Step 3 Replace every sample detail

Enter your own headline, service explanation, area and contact action. Delete template text you do not need, including fictional prices, dates, addresses and website names.

Make the headline the largest text. Give the contact action enough space to stand out. Keep body copy short enough to read comfortably at the final print size; simplify the message before shrinking the type.

If you advertise a special offer, explain its actual scope, dates and important conditions. Do not add a discount simply because the template includes one.

Step 4 Add your photo and business identity

Use Uploads to add your logo or original image, then place it in the design. Crop the image so the subject is clear. Get permission before publishing identifiable customers or private property details.

Use a small number of colours with strong text contrast. A plain background and dark text are easier to reproduce on an ordinary printer than pale text over a busy photo.

Step 5 Check the contact route

Type your website address clearly and test it separately. Confirm every phone digit. If you add a QR code, test its final printed version and keep a readable contact alternative nearby.

Ask someone to look at the flyer briefly and explain what you offer and how they would respond. If they cannot answer, edit the message before polishing the design.

Step 6 Download and inspect the file

Open Share, then Download. Choose a PDF option for printing, or PNG or JPG for an image you will share online. Canva's download help describes available formats.

If Canva asks for payment, inspect the design for paid elements and replace them with free alternatives. Do not start a trial just to finish this tutorial.

Open the downloaded file. Print one proof at the intended size before ordering copies. For commercial printing, ask the printer which PDF, bleed and crop-mark settings they require.

Completion checklist

Tick each item as you complete it. Your checks stay on this page until you leave or reload.

Save the editable design so you can update the same flyer when your offer or contact details change. For another useful visual, try our before-and-after photo tutorial.
